Our Sources

Every formula, span figure, and load assumption on this site is checked against publicly available, industry-standard references, including:

• The International Residential Code (IRC) and International Building Code (IBC), particularly Chapter 8 (Roof-Ceiling Construction)
• The American Wood Council (AWC) National Design Specification (NDS) and Span Tables for Joists and Rafters
• ANSI/TPI 1, the national standard for metal-plate-connected wood truss design
• ASCE 7 for snow and wind load reference methodology

Where a page cites a specific figure (like the rafter span table on our Rafter Size Calculator), we link directly to the primary source or an official industry tool so you can verify it yourself rather than take our word for it.

How We Verify Calculator Accuracy

Before publishing a new calculator or formula, we cross-check its output against hand calculations and, where possible, against a second independent published source — not just one reference. Where sources disagree by more than a rounding difference, we either investigate further or leave the figure out rather than publish a number we can't stand behind.

Every calculator on this site is also functionally tested after every change: we confirm it produces a live, sensible result across representative inputs, and we check that unrelated calculators weren't affected by the update. This is a standing part of our release process, not a one-time check.

Review & Update Cadence

Pages display a "Last updated" date reflecting the most recent substantive review — not just a timestamp refresh. We revisit content when: a cited code or standard is revised, a user reports a possible error, or we identify a gap through our own ongoing research. There is no fixed calendar cycle; accuracy triggers a review, not a schedule.

Corrections Policy

If you find an error — a wrong figure, a broken source link, or a calculation that doesn't match your own check — please tell us via our Contact page. We investigate every report against our sources and correct confirmed errors promptly. We do not remove or hide the fact that a correction was made.
