How to Estimate the Cost of Roof Trusses

Roof truss cost has three main components: material (lumber or steel, priced by board footage or member weight), labor (framing crew time to set and brace each truss), and installation extras like cranes for large spans or wide buildings.

Material choice has the biggest effect on price — SPF lumber is the cheapest option, Douglas Fir and engineered wood trusses cost more per board foot but can span further, and steel trusses carry the highest material cost but the lowest weight-to-strength ratio for very wide spans.

Truss spacing also changes total cost: 24" on-center spacing uses fewer, larger trusses, while 16" or 12" spacing uses more, often smaller trusses — the calculator's cost breakdown updates automatically as you change spacing so you can compare options.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the roof truss cost calculated?

This calculator multiplies your estimated board footage by a per-board-foot material rate, then adds labor and installation costs based on total roof area — giving a live material, labor, and installation breakdown as you adjust your inputs.
